Morocco has won the bid to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON while Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the 2027 edition.
The decision was announced on Wednesday morning by the CAF president Patrice Motsepe shortly after the body’s executive committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt.
Morocco amassed all 22 votes to emerge unopposed as the host after bidding countries like Algeria decided to pull out of the race on the eve of the CAF executive committee’s meeting while the Nigeria-Benin contingency also withdrew their bid for the 2025 as they focused for the 2027 rights.
It would be the third time the North African nation will be hosting continental football tournaments in three years.
The 2025 edition was stripped off Guinea in October last year after CAF deemed the country’s slow progress could not deliver in time.
Morocco hosted the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, AWCON and will host the next edition next year.
The 2025 AFCON, which was supposed to be held in June-July 2025, might be staged between January and February 2026 due to the formation of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup scheduled to be held in June-July 2025.
Morocco became the first and only African country to reach the semi-final of the FIFA men’s World Cup.
Meanwhile Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have won the right to host the 2027 edition of the African Cup of Nations, seeing out competition from Algeria, Egypt, Botswana and Nigeria/Benin Republic.
