Brazil’s Bruno Soares says working hard and believing things would eventually get better has paid off for him and his partner Mate Pavic.
Soares and Pavic, who have been playing together since the Fever-Tree Championships in Queen’s, won their maiden team title at the Shanghai Masters this past week.
No. 8 seeds Soares and Pavic dropped just six games en route to beating defending champions Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 6-4 6-2 in the Shanghai final. “We have been playing well for a while already. It’s a pretty new partnership, but we weren’t winning that many matches,” Soares said after the final, per the ATP website.
“But we kept on believing, I think working hard, and that’s it… I felt like after the first two wins, we had some momentum going. We had the confidence a little bit higher and then the last three matches I think we played extremely well”.
Pavic, 26, and 37-year-old Soares didn’t drop a single set en route to winning it all in Shanghai. “We played all the matches pretty good,” Pavic said. “Besides the semi-final, we didn’t drop a serve for four matches.
So everything was just working. The kind of chemistry was good. It was a fun week.”
