The National and State Assembly election petitions tribunal sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, has nullified the election of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the All Progressives Congress representing Abia North at the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
The tribunal in a judgment on Monday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a supplementary election within 90 days in eight wards in Arochukwu Local Government Area of the state.
Other affected areas include polling units in Ohafia and Isukwuato LGAs where votes were cancelled during the senatorial election in Abia North senatorial district.
The three-member tribunal led by Justice Cornelius Akintayo ordered the supplementary election based on the grounds that there was substantial noncompliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act as amended.
It would be recalled that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election, Mao Ohuabunwa, had challenged the victory of the Senate Chief Whip, Orji Kalu, in the Senatorial election.
