Former Nigeria centre-back, Andrew Uwe, believes Super Eagles will scale the AFCON 2019 quarterfinal hurdle posed by Bafana Bafana of South Africa, Completesports.com reports.
Super Eagles defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the round of 16 3-2 while Bafana Bafana shocked the hosts, Pharaoh’s of Egypt, to set up Wednesday’s quarterfinal clash – the 14th confrontation between the two sides since 1992.
And the former Leventis United stopper who is now based in Germany and currently holds the prestigious German FA-certified DBF and UEFA B coaching licences, says the Gernot Rohr’s men are now fired up to face any foes, including the Banana Bafana.
“I think the Super Eagles have an edge over Bafana Bafana. Yes, it’s not going to be a straight jacket thing, but yes, Super Eagles have an edge,” Uwe who won silver medal with Eagles at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco tells Completesports.com on phone from his base in Germany.
Uwe is clear on reasons he believes the three-time champions will shut out the South Africans on Wednesday.
“Before the game against Cameroon, they were not convincing, and things got too bad when they lost 2-0 to Madagascar.
“Hope seemed lost on them but, hey, they came back to live against Cameroon. Now that confidence is back, and it will be difficult to stop a team with such confidence,” reiterates.
