Trust: Key to Nigeria’s Unity-Justin Welby

As part of the celebrations marking the 45th Convocation Ceremony of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the guest speaker at the pre-convocation lecture highlighted the critical role of trust in national unity.

The event held at the Abdullahi Mahadi Conference Centre, themed: “Building Inter-Ethnic and, Religious Harmony in Nigeria: Pathways to National Unity” on the 29th of January, 2026 Featuring Reverend Justin Welby alongside other dignitaries.

In his speech, Justin Welby the former Archbishop of Canterbury who served between 2013-2024 until his voluntary retirement, described trust as a key foundation for building peace, unity, and harmony in Nigeria. “Religious leaders and politicians in Nigeria have a vital role to play in ensuring peaceful coexistence by sensitizing their followers to the significance of peace.” He explained.

Justin Welby noted that the conflict that affects the whole world can only be settled through dialogue and therefore, called on Nigerians to always protect the sovereignty of their country, stating that no foreign nation could protect Nigeria.

Earlier, the Chairman of the event, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, re-emphasized that trust requires actions rooted in respect, mutual understanding, and equal treatment. He urged Nigerians to fear God to sustain peace, love, and harmony among themselves.

Speaking during the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Adamu Ahmed, expressed his appreciation to the guest speaker, who travelled from London specifically to grace the event.
