FG Clears ₦1 Trillion Rail Transit Project for Kano Days After Gov. Yusuf’s Defection

The Federal Government has given approval for a ₦1 trillion metropolitan rail system to be built in Kano State, marking one of the largest urban transport investments in the region.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed the approval while speaking to members of the Kano delegation that took part in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State.

He said the proposed rail network will transform public transport across Kano metropolis, offering residents a modern and affordable mass transit option while linking major districts within the city.

According to the governor, the project is expected to ease chronic traffic congestion, improve movement within the city, boost commercial activities and make Kano more attractive to investors.

Governor Yusuf described the rail project as a major federal intervention that would strengthen Kano’s position as a leading commercial and transport centre in Northern Nigeria.

He also attributed the approval to his administration’s recent alignment with the Federal Government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), explaining that the move was driven by the need to secure large-scale development projects for the state.

“Our decision was taken in the best interest of the people, to accelerate development and attract projects that will directly improve their lives,” Yusuf said.

The governor assured that the state government would collaborate closely with federal agencies to ensure the project is executed transparently, on schedule and with maximum benefit to residents.

He thanked the Federal Government for approving the rail scheme and reiterated his administration’s readiness to support federal programmes through enabling policies and complementary infrastructure.
