Kano Deputy Governor Urged to Resign Amid Political Rift
Kano State’s political landscape was rocked on Thursday as the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, publicly called on Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo to step down. The appeal follows Gwarzo’s refusal to join Governor Abba Yusuf in defecting from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists in Kano, Waiya argued that effective governance depends on trust and unity within the executive council. He warned that a deputy governor who does not share the governor’s political alignment cannot fully participate in critical decision-making.
“This is a personal decision, but it is not appropriate for someone outside the governor’s political fold to attend key council meetings. Who knows with whom sensitive government matters might be shared? Trust is central in government, and it is impossible to fully trust someone who is no longer aligned with you,” Waiya said.
He added that resignation would be the most dignified course of action. “If I were in his shoes, I would humbly step aside,” the commissioner noted.
Governor Yusuf officially joined the APC earlier this month, bringing along lawmakers, local government chairpersons, and councillors, in a move widely seen as a strategic alignment with the federal government to accelerate development in Kano State.
Waiya described the governor’s defection as a step that would enhance access to federal projects and interventions, positioning Kano for broader growth and infrastructure opportunities.
Gwarzo’s next steps remain uncertain as political realignments continue to reshape the state’s power dynamics, leaving observers watching closely for how the deputy governor will respond to calls for his resignation.
