Housewives protest 7-year blackout in Kano

Hundreds of Housewives in Kano on Tuesday evening staged a peaceful protest over absence of power supply by Kano Electricity Distribution Company to Ungwar Chika Sarari, Medile, Kumbotso local government area of Kano metropolis.

A scene that is rare in a conservative Kano society, tens, and hundreds of women were seen in circumbulating in the quarters calling for attention of relevant authority.

Hafsa Aliyu Hamza, spokesperson to the aggrieved women told reporters that “for 7 years, we have not seen a blink of power in this quarters, a situation that has not only enabled criminals, but emboldened them to carry out their nefarious actions without let or hindrance “

Mrs Aliyu Hamza explained said “we are imprisoned in our houses at sunsets because of threat by criminals, and we felt this protest would draw the attention of government for possible intervention. “

Sufyanu Ali Sani, hubby to one of the protesters said ” we sanction this protest because, as women they feel the pinch more than anyone around “
Ali Sani explained that an unnamed legislator had supplied them with transformer but the community has not been able to raise enough fund for Kano Electricity Distribution Company to activate it.

Ibrahim Sani Shawai, Head Corporate Affairs, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) was not available to comment, as calls made to his known GSM was dignified with a response.
