Breaking: Maradona to undergo brain surgery over alcohol-related blood clot

Diego Maradona will undergo brain surgery following his admission to hospital, according to reports in Argentina.

The iconic Argentine was taken to a hospital in La Plata – about an hour and half drive away from the capital Buenas Aires – on Monday, just days after turning 60.

Maradona, the Barcelona and Napoli great, currently the manager of Gimnasia LP, was admitted and coronavirus was immediately ruled out as a cause for his illness.

Now however, amid much rumour and conjecture, TYC Sports have stated that Maradona will undergo surgery on a blood clot on his brain.

They declare that a subdural hemetoma was detected during a CT scan on Tuesday, and he will undergo surgery.

Maradona is being transferred to a clinic in Olivos for the procedure, which could last for up to six hours.

Maradona had last been seen publicly in attendance for Gimnasia’s fixture against Patronato on Friday night.

But a fan video showed the 1986 World Cup winner struggling as he had to be helped out the ground.

His daughter Gianinna responded to the video, declaring: “It tears my soul apart.”

In 2005 he underwent gastric bypass surgery to help in his battle with weight, before undergoing the same procedure again in 2015.

He was also admitted to hospital in January 2019 with internal bleeding in the stomach.
