2027: Iyabo Obasanjo Declares Ambition to Contest for Ogun Governorship Under APC

By Umar Ibrahim Umar.

Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially confirmed her membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the party as her “natural home.”

Iyabo made the announcement during an interview with Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports in Abeokuta.

The former senator marked her return to active politics after about 15 years, joining the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State.

Speaking on her political comeback, Iyabo said she was motivated by persistent encouragement from her supporters over the past year. “A group of people whom I did not bring together, I did not form into a group, have been working for two years now.

They started telling me, ‘We think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she explained.

The former Ogun State Commissioner for Health, who lost her re-election bid in 2011 to Senator Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), said she could not return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to “all kinds of turmoil” in the party.

She also noted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was another option, but added that the party “does not have its ducks in a row yet.”

“So, I think APC is my natural home. I don’t have any animosity towards any individual or group within the APC.

Her return to politics is seen as a significant boost for the APC in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections, strengthening the party’s profile with a high-profile and politically experienced figure.
