Suspected Killers of Kano Housewife, Six Children to Remain in Remand
A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kano has ordered the remand of three men accused of killing a woman, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters of the state.
The suspects — Umar Auwalu, 23, from Sabuwar Gandu; Isyaku Yakubu, 40, of Sagagi; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada — were brought before the court on Thursday. Prosecutors filed eight charges against them, including conspiracy, criminal trespass, robbery, culpable homicide, rape, arson, possession of dangerous weapons and causing grievous harm.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Kano State, Abdulkarim Maude (SAN), told the court that the alleged crimes were committed on January 17, 2026. He said Auwalu, who is reportedly related to the deceased, conspired with the other defendants and unlawfully gained access to the family’s home, where the woman and her six children were killed.
Maude also informed the court that the defendants were suspected to be linked to an earlier attack in November 2025 at Tudun Yola Quarters, where two housewives were allegedly robbed, killed and their bodies set on fire.
According to the prosecution, the offences violate various provisions of the Penal Code, including Sections 97, 221, 283, 298, 319, 336 and 348.
In a separate but related case, the court also ordered the remand of Umar Ali, who was accused of receiving the eyes of a nine-year-old girl, allegedly removed by the first defendant after raping her.
All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Defence counsel, A. S. Tunkuye, asked the court to compel the Attorney General to provide the defence team with access to the case diary and relevant records to allow adequate preparation for trial.
Ruling on the matter, Chief Magistrate Auwal Yusuf-Suleiman ordered that the defendants be held in a correctional facility and directed the prosecution to furnish the defence with all necessary case materials. The case was adjourned until March 11, 2026, for further mention.
