Kano Loses Two to Separate Drowning Incidents in One Day

Kano State recorded two fatal drowning incidents on Thursday, claiming the lives of an 18-year-old and an eight-year-old in separate locations across the state.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that the first victim, identified as Yusif Malam-Gwani, drowned after falling into an open water body at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu, in Ungogo Local Government Area.

According to the Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, the agency received a distress call on Thursday afternoon alerting officials to the incident. A rescue team was immediately dispatched from the service’s headquarters, but the teenager was recovered lifeless from the water. His body was later handed over to the ward head of Bachirawa Quarters, Jibrin Isah.

In a related incident the same day, an eight-year-old boy, Abdussalam Ibrahim, drowned after falling into a well at Kofar Yamma in Karaye town, Karaye Local Government Area.

Fire Service officials said they were alerted to the incident by one of their staff members, prompting the deployment of another rescue team to the scene. The child was also retrieved dead and subsequently released to his father, Malam Musa Mudi.

The Fire Service has urged residents to take extra precautions around open wells, ponds and other uncovered water sources, warning that such hazards pose serious risks, particularly to children.

The agency expressed condolences to the families affected by the incidents and called for greater community vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.
