Seun Kuti Warms Wizkid’s Fans Against Disrespect for His Father, Fela

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has publicly criticised fans of Nigerian superstar Wizkid, warning them to stop comparing the artist to his legendary father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

In a lengthy video shared on Instagram, Seun expressed frustration with what he described as repeated and disrespectful attempts by members of Wizkid FC, the singer’s fanbase to drag Fela’s name into debates about modern music. He said such comparisons misrepresent his father’s legacy and diminish the late Afrobeat pioneer’s cultural impact.

“Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” Seun said. “Why must you always find a way to bring Fela into your discussions? You try to claim your artiste is the new Fela, but the shoes are too big to fill.” He added that repeatedly invoking his father in online arguments shows “a lack of respect” and amounts to ignorance rather than genuine admiration.

Seun argued that the legacy of Fela, a musician known not just for his sound but for his political activism and social commentary cannot be replicated or simply compared with contemporary pop success. He also criticised what he sees as toxic fan culture, suggesting that it fuels unnecessary rivalry in the industry rather than focusing on the music itself.

The remarks sparked a heated reaction across social media. Supporters of Seun’s stance said Fela’s influence should be respected and not reduced to comparisons with modern stars. Some agreed that Fela’s legacy is rooted in cultural and political resistance, making direct comparisons inappropriate.

On the other hand, many Wizkid supporters pushed back against Seun’s comments online, emphasising Wizkid’s own accomplishments — including global streaming milestones, international recognition and influence, arguing that fans are not attempting to “rewrite history,” but to honour both artists in their respective spaces.
