Bayelsa dominates 2024 Gateway games medal standings

Team Bayelsa is currently leading the medals charge at the 2024 National Sports Festival, taking place in Ogun State as the multi-sports event continues to gather momentum in Abeokuta, the capital city, and other centres across the state.

The riverine state has amassed a total of nine medals so far, consisting of six gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

They are closely followed by Oyo State with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal, while Lagos State is next on the table with three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Cross River State took an early lead on the table after day two, but they remain on three gold medals, dropping to fourth, while Rivers State completes the top five with two gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

The Invited Junior Athletes, who are dubbed as the 38th state at the games, are also rubbing shoulders with the elites, occupying the sixth position with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal.

Defending champion, Delta State, is yet to exert its dominance, sitting in seventh position after Tuesday’s round of events with one gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

They have won the last four editions of the games.

So far, a total of 71 medals have been won at the games, consisting 23 gold, 23 silver and 25 bronze medals.

The tussle for more medals continues on Wednesday with medal events in weightlifting, women’s badminton, squash and other games.

Other events commencing today include swimming and tennis at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, while gymnastics and volleyball will get underway at the Alake Sports Complex.
