Why I didn’t adopt my husband’s surname — Actress Joke Silva opens up

Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has revealed why she decided not to take her husband’s surnname, Jacobs, after marriage.

The couple who have been married since 1989 have both kept their last names unchanged despite the usual tradition.

Joke Silva explained that it was an intentional and strategic move from her husband.

She said that Olu Jacobs advised her to keep her maiden name to maintain her already growing professional identity.

“He was the one who actually advised that I don’t because he understood the importance of branding.

“He was like, my brand has started building as Joke Silva and changing brands several years after one has been using that brand, as far as he was concerned, could cause problems for me.” Joke Silva explained.

She also informed that although the general public refers to her as Joke Silva, close friends and family refer to her as Mrs Jacobs.

“So, we kept the name Joke Silva as the brand but within the circles, there was nobody who didn’t know I was Mrs Jacobs. It really didn’t matter,” she said while clearing the air.

The veteran actress had earlier revealed that her father was not initially on board with her marriage to Olu Jacobs because of the 20-year age gap, however, she went on with her decision because she loved him .

The couple have been together for about 36 years and have been a constant inspiration for marriages.
