Director General of NIMC, Engr. Abioye Coker Odusote has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s database from cyber threats. Speaking at a two-day roundtable with online newspaper publishers in Abuja, she emphasized that NIMC has implemented robust measures to ensure the nation’s database is secure.

“Our infrastructure is built on the stringent ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standard, guaranteeing the highest levels of data protection,” Coker-Odusote stated. “We have invested in cutting-edge cybersecurity technologies, including encryption, multi-factor authentication, and real-time monitoring systems, to safeguard our database.”

Coker-Odusote underscored NIMC’s dedication to upholding ethical standards in data protection, ensuring that all partners and vendors comply with strict security standards. “We are unwavering in our commitment to protecting Nigeria’s database,” she stressed. “Our goal is to ensure that every citizen and legal resident is captured in the country’s identity database, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16.9).”

Tito Ejenavi, Coordinator of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, acknowledged the critical role of digital media in shaping public opinion and disseminating information. “Historically, identity systems have marginalized certain groups due to logistical challenges and social stigmas,” she noted. “We are committed to reversing this trend, ensuring our ID system is inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all Nigerians.”

Coker-Odusote emphasized that NIMC is determined to leave no one behind, particularly those at risk of exclusion. “We have a compelling strategy in place, supported by the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, to ensure that everyone, including persons with disabilities, women, children, the elderly, and those in rural and hard-to-reach areas, is captured in the country’s identity database.”

Danlami Nmodu, National Vice President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), commended the organizers of the roundtable and assured them of the commitment of online publishers to drive accurate narratives of NIMC’s efforts. “We recognize the importance of our role in shaping public opinion and disseminating information,” he stated. “We will continue to support NIMC in its mission to ensure that every Nigerian has a form of identity.”
