The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Gombe State has condemned the amputation of a 12-year-old boy’s arms over alleged phone theft, calling it a “heinous and unacceptable” act.
The boy, Adamu, had his arms amputated as a punishment for allegedly stealing a phone, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Mwalin Abdu, Vice Chairperson of the NBA and Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee, described the incident as “barbaric and inhumane” and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
“This is a clear violation of the child’s rights and a stark reminder of the need for urgent action to protect our children from such brutality,” Abdu said.
The NBA has called for charges to be brought against those responsible for the amputation, including the perpetrators and any enablers or accomplices.
The association has also demanded that the state government takes immediate action to provide support and rehabilitation to Adamu and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
“We urge the government to take concrete steps to address the root causes of this violence and ensure that our children are protected from such harm,” Abdu said.
The NBA has also called for increased awareness and education campaigns to prevent such incidents and promote the rights and well-being of children in the state.
