
A fire on Wednesday night gutted the Dunukofia Council Secretariat in the Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The inferno, which occurred around 7 pm, was said to be caused by bush burning.
A witness said the fire would have escalated if not for the quick response of firefighters who arrived at the scene shortly.
State Fire Chief, Engr. Dr. Martin Agbili confirmed the incident, saying no life was lost.
According to him: “At about 1853hrs (6.53 pm) of Wednesday 07-02-2024, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of Heavy Fire Outbreak at Dunukofia.
“Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and gallant Firefighters to the scene of the fire and fought, controlled, and extinguished the fire.
“The cause of the Fire was the Bush Fire which was started by unknown person(s) and encroached on the Local Government Council Secretariat.
“During the firefighting operations, we were able to control and extinguish the fire and prevented it from destroying a lot of things at the Local Government Council.
“We withdrew from the fire scene at about 2030hrs (8.30 pm) after fighting the fire to a standstill and calming the situation.
“It is also important that we clear all bushes around our environment,, especially at this dry season and harmattan to avoid had I known.”
