A Civil Society Organization, Change.org, has petitioned the federal government over the abduction of more than 24 students from the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS), Zamfara state.
The Lead Campaigner for change.org Nigeria, Maryam Bukar Hassan, in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, said the petition was launched by a concerned citizen, Umar Gombe, and described the development as ‘deeply troubling’.
She called on Nigerians to sign the petition to be part of the call for #FreeFUGUS girls and urged them to stand together in solidarity to demonstrate commitment to the safe return of the abducted students.
“We are deeply troubled by the distressing situation that has unfolded in Zamfara State, where more than 24 students from the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS), were abducted over two weeks ago.
“This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need for swift and decisive action to ensure the safety of these young girls.
Zamfara State, like many other regions in the northwest, has grappled with insecurity due to the activities of bandits.
“The abduction of these students is a poignant reminder of the constant challenges faced by our fellow students. The fear and uncertainty they must be experiencing is unimaginable. It is not acceptable to stand by in silence while these young girls remain in captivity.
” We appeal to the relevant authorities, including the government and security agencies, to act swiftly and effectively to secure the safe release of the #FreeFUGUS girls. These students should be pursuing their education without fear, as every student should.
“Let us unite and make our voices heard. We must join hands and demand the safe return of the abducted FUGUS students. Together, we can collectively appeal to put an end to this nightmare and reunite these students with their families and communities.
