The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State chapter has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve the ongoing strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Speaking at protest ground, the Lagos state NLC chapter chairperson, Agnes Sessy, ordered government to act or risk another #ENDSARS protest.
“If the Federal Government does not resolve the strike within two weeks, there would be nationwide mass protest. In5 fact, the ENDSARS protest would be a child’s play.”
Meanwhile, members of NLC and youth participating in the ongoing protest which began on Tuesday morning have moved from Ikeja to the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa.
The protesters carried placards with several inscriptions such as ‘Stop importation of petrol, refine the refineries’, ‘Nigeria at 60 years of independence, more hunger in the land, etc.
Another placard read, “Reduce the cost of governance now, save the masses from poverty and hunger.”
NLC had on Monday called on members and civil society groups in Lagos State to come out en-masse on Tuesday morning to begin the two-day protest in solidarity with striking lecturers.
Mrs. Funmi Sessi, Lagos state chairman of NLC gave the directive at a stakeholders’ meeting at the union’s secretariat in Yaba, Lagos state.
Sessi said that the exercise was ready to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the nationwide action.
She said: “We will be converging as early as 6:30 a.m. at Ikeja and take off by 7.00 a.m. to deliver a letter to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Alausa.
“The protest is to support ASUU in the ongoing strike, so we call on all affiliate members to come out en masse,’’ she said.
Security has now been beefed up at the State Secretariat to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
