A specie of mosquito resistant to most insecticide-treated nets except nets treated with Primiphosmethyl has been discovered in Jigawa State.
The discovery was made by a team of researchers at the Federal University, Dutse, led by Professor Mustapha Musa Dogara as part of their effort to contribute to the fight against malaria.
The research is sponsored by the Global Programme for Malaria Control, under the Surveillance for Mosquito Resistance against 3 classes of insecticides (Pyrethroids, Organochlorine and Organophospates) in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Professor Dogara said the research became necessary when it became obvious that mosquitoes all over the world were developing resistance to long-lasting Insecticide-treated bed nets coated with pyrethriod insecticides.
According to the professor, the breeding sites of the specie of mosquito was identified and samples of its lavae was collected from six local governments in Jigawa: Dutse, Birnin Kudu, Kafin Hausa, Auyo, Ringim and Taura.
The research findings, Professor Dogara explained, shows that only Primiphosmethl insecticides gives 100% protection against mosquitoes and their recommendation is that henceforth only bed nets coated with Primiphosmethl should be deployed to Jigawa State.
