Soroptimist International to provide shelter for victims of sexual violence, trafficking

An NGO, Soroptimist International Nigeria Association(SINA) has offered to provide sheltering facilities for survivors/victims of sexual and gender based violence and human trafficking.

The NGO also said it will provide counselling and social support for survivors to regain their self-esteem, as well as vocational training facilities for vulnerable women and girls.

Mrs Gloria Iveren Bai made this pledge during her inauguration as the 24th president of the international NGO and occasion of change of insignia at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja.

The event was chaired by Sir D.D Dodo, SAN, while the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen who was represented at the event was the special guest of honour.

The new president highlighted the enormous challenges girls and women are currently facing in the country in form of “sexual and gender-based violence; they are being kidnapped, trafficked, raped and tortured and many have been displaced, losing their livelihoods in the process and are now living in IDP camps”.

She said a comprehensive rehabilitation programme needs to be put in place to assist victims of some of these violations to come out of their traumas by educating them, empowering and enabling them to gain access to economic opportunities.
