The Kano Shariah police, on Tuesday took into custody no fewer than 32 commercial sex workers in a sweeping operation.
Kano state Hisbah Commandant General, Sheikh Muhammad Harun Ibn Sina said the prostitutes were arrested at a tomato market in Badume, Bichi local government area of Kano state.
Sheikh Muhammad Harun Ibn Sina disclosed that screening conducted to ascertain their health status indicated that 12 out of 32 in custody are HIV-positive.
Sheikh Ibn Sina explained that 7 out of HIV carrier among the 12 are aware of their status while five of them don’t even know their status.
He revealed that the detained commercial sex workers are indigenes of Kano, Jigawa, Enugu, Edo, Katsina, Cross River, Adamawa, Zamfara and the Cameroon Republic.
Sheikh Ibn Sina said their male collaborators have been handed over to National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) for drug-related offences.
