Yobe gov approves N441.8 million for 321 local govt retirees

At a time most state governments in Nigeria are defaulting in their obligations to retirees, the governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni has approved the total sum of N441, 870, 166.50 for payment of the liabilities of 321 retirees from across the 17 local government areas of the state.

In a statement by Abdullahi Bego, the state’s Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, the payment constituted batch 42 in the long list of benefit payments to retired local government staff.

Of the 321 affected LG staff, 94 are deceased and their benefits, totaling N152, 837, 862.15 would be paid to their next of kin. The remaining sum of N289, 052, 304.35 would be paid to 227 living retirees.

The statement read, “Some may recall that on Wednesday 11th March 2020, Governor Buni had approved the payment of N353, 171, 749.70 to 253 retirees from across the 17 local government areas of the state.

“Payment approvals granted by the governor are always based on the recommendations of the standing committee for the verification and settlement of outstanding pension and gratuity liabilities of local government retirees.”
