NSC, haulers meet, slash truck charges by 30%

The cost of haulage of cargoes from the ports to their destinations has been reduced by 30%.

The reduction came about in view of the ease of movement by truckers due to the lockdown.

This was disclosed in a press statement signed by Rakiya Zubairu, the Deputy Director of Public Relation, Nigerian Shippers Council after a meeting between the NSC and the various haulage associations.

Some of the associations that participated and took the decision are: National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Association of Maritime Transport Owners (AMATO), Road Transport Employers Association (RTEAN), Corporate Fleet Owners Association and Container Truck Owners Association. Others are Amalgamation of Container Truck Owners and Council of Maritime Transport Union and Association (COMTUA)

“It was agreed at the meeting that truckers
haulage rates be reviewed downwards by thirty percent during the lockdown period”, the statement said.

The meeting also discussed “adherence to health and safety guidelines during this period of COVID-19 pandemic” having “observed that truckers were not taking specfied precautions as issued by health authorities” and reminded them of potential for the “spread of the virus in the course of their travels across Nigeria”
