The anti-curruption summit being organised by the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) is commencing this morning, December 9, 2019.
The one-day summit is in collaboration with other agencies of the Federal Ministry of Transportation in partnership with the Economic and Financial crimes Commission (EFCC).
The summit has the theme “Zero Tolerance for Corruption in the Maritime Sector”, and is expected to have in attendance His Excellency President Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alh. Muhammadu Buhari, the Ghanaian President, President Nana Akufo-Addo, legislators, financial institutions and critical stakeholders in the Maritime Industry.
In a statement signed by NSC Executive Secretary, Hassan Bello, the summit will also feature a road walk by 7am at EFCC Zonal Office Wuse 11, ABUJA.
According to the statement, the maritime and transport sectors are catalysts for socio-economic development of any nation particularly as it concerns businesses, markets, countries and people/citizens.
The imperative of the summit is underscored by the fact that the maritime transport sector has remained vulnerable to unwholesome practices, despite this government’s zero tolerance for curruption, noting how worrisome capital flight and fiscal leakages have plagued the sector.
The objective of the joint Summit, therefore, is to highlight the areas of corrupt practices in the sector and collectively develop strategies to curb the menace threatening the economies of most African nations.
It is expected that a roadmap that would reduce considerably corrupt practices would be generated at the end of the Summit as well as sustainable structures that will guarantee predictability, efficiency and transparency in the industry.
