Cedarcrest Hospitals to establish polio centre for survivors in Abuja

Concerned about the near absence of medical care of polio survivors, Cedarcrest hospitals has signed a partnership agreement with a German firm, Polio Centre of the Catholic Hospital, Koblenz-Montabeur, Germany to establish a centre in Abuja to give succour to those who survive the scourge.

The German hospital is the main referral Centre in Germany for the treatment of post- polio patients.

The Medical director, of the hospitals, Dr Felix Ogedegbe disclosed this in his wekcome remarks in the hospitas’ maiden edition of their News Letter.

While inviting the general public to their polio week, the MD said even though ” Nigeria is on verge the verge of being totally polio free” after tremendous work done on polio eradication by government agencies and none government organisations”, not enough attention has been paid to the medical care of polio survivors”.

He said polio survivors are “suffering from treatable medical complications and preventable secondary deterioration, while the medical community in general, unaware of recent advances in polio care, tell them nothing can be done”

The partnership with the German hospital is set to reverse this trend as the proposed centre will run as a “not for profit organisation and will aim to bring advanced post-polio care to the reach of millions of Nigerians living with complications of poliomyelitis”Dr Ogedegbe promised.

At the Cedarcrest polio week, events include lectures, speeches and treatment sessions.
