Andy Ruiz Jr is open to fighting in the Olympics next year despite being a professional heavyweight world champion.
The rules on Olympic eligibility were relaxed ahead of the 2016 edition with professionals allowed to fight for the first time.
And Ruiz, who beat Anthony Joshua in a huge upset in June, has been invited to take part in Tokyo next summer.
In a letter from the office of Mexico’s president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Ruiz was invited to enter the qualifying process for the Games.
The invitation continues: “We face a historical challenge as for more than half a century, Mexico has not obtained a gold medal in boxing.
“But with your support and patriotic collaboration, we are sure that its boxing talents will bring Olympic glory to our country and in the same way, you will receive the thanks of the people of Mexico.”
Ruiz is due to take on Joshua in their rematch on December 7 in Saudi Arabia but claims he would be open to the possibility of bidding to win gold.
“It would be a great honour to represent Mexico in the Olympic Games,” he said.
“I have to see the possible contractual commitments, but we will do everything possible to contribute in any way and put the name of Mexico high once again.
