Buhari sends special envoy to SA as High Commissioner denies xenophobic attacks


In the wake of protests by Nigerians over xenophobic attacks on their compatriots in South Africa, President Muhammadu Buhari has dispatched a special envoy to Pretoria to interface with the South African government.

 

According to statement issued by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President(Media & Publicity) on Tuesday, Buhari expressed serious concerns over the attacks on Nigerian citizens and property in South Africa since August 29, 2019.

“President Buhari has also despatched a Special Envoy to convey to President Cyril Ramaphosa his concerns and also interact with his South African counterpart on the situation,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, SouthAfrica’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Bobby Monroe on Tuesday debunked reports of xenophobic attacks in his country.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Commissioner, described the attacks as “sporadic acts of violence”,  adding that businesses belonging to other South Africans were equally destroyed in the violence.
