UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw: All you need to know

The 16 teams left in this season’s Champions League have been confirmed.

This year, UEFA switched up the format of the competition, changing it to a league phase that had 36 clubs.

There was also the introduction of a play-off round for the Round of 16, which has seen some top teams exit the competition early.

Real Madrid have sent Manchester City packing with a 6-3 aggregate win.

The current holders will be in Friday’s draw with Paris Saint-Germain, Club Brugge, Feyenoord, PSV, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Benfica. All eight booked their place in the last-16 via play-off wins.

Other teams that will be in the draw are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Atleti, Barcelona, Inter, Leverkusen, Lille and Liverpool.

The ties for the round of 16 will be played during the weeks of March 4 and March 5 with the return legs being held on March 11 and March 12.

For the last-16 draw, UEFA states that four bowls will be prepared for this draw, with two for each side of the bracket.

Each bowl contains two balls with the winners of the round of 16 matches from one rung of the relevant side of the bracket.

This means that the first silver bowl will contain slips of paper marked ‘Winners R16 1’ and ‘Winners R16 2’ and the second silver bowl will have papers marked with ‘Winners R16 3’ and ‘Winners R16 4’.

The first bowl on the blue side will contain slips of paper marked ‘Winners R16 5’ and ‘Winners R16 6’ and, finally, ‘Winners R16 7’ and ‘Winners R16 8’ in the second bowl on the blue side.

At this stage, teams from the same domestic league can face each other, which had not always been the case.

They can also be paired with teams they previously faced in the league phase.
