A Delta Airlines flight carrying 80 people flipped on landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, triggering a swift emergency response.
While all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, three individuals sustained critical injuries, the BBC reports.
The aircraft, Delta Flight 4819 from Minneapolis, crashed onto the snow-covered tarmac at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Shocking images circulating online depict the overturned aircraft as firefighters worked to contain potential hazards while passengers hurriedly evacuated.
Authorities confirmed that all 76 passengers and four crew members were accounted for.
Peel Regional Police said investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the incident, with Constable Sarah Patten stating, “Most passengers are unharmed, but we are still assessing the situation.”
Delta Airlines acknowledged the event, stating it was gathering details and would provide updates as they became available.
The incident occurred as Toronto Pearson grappled with operational disruptions caused by a recent snowstorm, which had left 22cm of snow on the runways over the weekend.
Despite the severity of the incident, air traffic at the airport resumed by 5 p.m., with officials working to ensure flight operations continued safely.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has since been assisting affected passengers and their families.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, but aviation experts suggest that weather conditions, including icy runways and high winds, could have played a role.
