A former Chairman of the governing board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, says the directives by the Federal Government to state governors to set up independent investigative panels to probe alleged human rights violations by now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, would not address the demands by the #EndSARS protesters.
Odinkalu said there had been series of reports by panels of inquiry on police reforms and human rights violations, that have proffered adequate recommendations in addressing the endemic rot in the police, but were allowed to gather dust in the archives.
He noted that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was using the panels of inquiry to deflect attention from the germane issues plaguing Nigerian youth and the country as a while.
The erstwhile NHRC chair stated this on Channels Television evening programme, Politic Today, last Friday, while reacting to the nationwide protests on police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria.
