For the first time since 2006, Maria Sharapova is heading to Austria. The Multiple time Grand Slam champion will be featuring at the Upper Austria Ladies’ Linz in October, the tournament announced recently.
“I have so many great memories of the Linz tournament and I am really excited to be coming back to see many of my amazing fans,” Sharapova said.
“I am very appreciative to the tournament and the sponsors and just very excited to play.” The Russian won the tournament in 2006, and has not competed at the European indoor event since then. Sharapova recently lost in the Opening Round of the US Open to eventual finalist Serena Williams.
The Russian has managed a sub-standard 8-7 win-loss record this year, showing signs of struggles since her comeback. Though she started the year on a good note, reaching the quarterfinals in China and the Fourth Round in the first Slam of the year – the Australian Open, she has not managed to string together back to back victories since.
She skipped the French Open this year and lost in the first rounds at Wimbledon and the US Open. With 36 career titles to her name, Sharapova has amassed over $38 M in prize money.
