Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to 14 days in prison, followed by one year of probation, over her involvement in a university exams scam.
The actress pleaded guilty to paying a proctor $15,000 to correct her daughter’s SAT answers to give her a higher score.
In a statement (via BBC News) after the sentencing, Huffman said: “There are no excuses or justifications for my actions. I would like to apologise again to my daughter, my husband, my family and the educational community for my actions.
“And I especially want to apologise to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices supporting their children.”
Judge Indira Talwani said that Huffman has accepted responsibility for her crime, but “trying to be a good mother does not excuse” her actions.
Huffman must now report to prison in six weeks and pay a $30,000 fine.
In light of the scam, Huffman’s Desperate Housewives co-star Eva Longoria previously offered her support.
Longoria wrote in a letter that she was bullied on the set of Desperate Housewives, and it was Huffman who brought it to an end.
“There was a time I was being bullied at work by a co-worker,” Longoria said, refraining from naming the person responsible.
“I dreaded the days I had to work with that person because it was pure torture. Until one day, Felicity told the bully ‘enough’, and it all stopped.
