The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has introduced a new broadcasting code to deal with the issues of hate speech and fake news.
In a new broadcasting code, the NBC said on Tuesday that there had been some concerns over the menace of hate speech and fake news.
In the 6th broadcasting code, the commission revealed that it commissioned experts who researched on the problems of hate speech and made far reaching recommendations to discourage broadcasters from violating the code.
“Another significant review is the Character of Local Content. There were some controversies regarding the production of Local Content which arose from the hosting of the Multichoice Reality Show, “BigbrotherNaija” in South Africa.
“The regulator took the concerns of the Nigerian Creative industry into consideration, and amended the provisions on Local Content. Therefore, all big Local Content Productions shall be done in Nigeria. This is to provide jobs for teaming local talents and artisans.
“Finally, on emerging trends in Digital Switch Over process, the 6th edition of the Code ensure that these new trends can now assume some legal definitions. Some tiers and propositions within the digital ecology have been codified. And the philosophy of Local Content in the digital era has also been reflected in the Code,” the NBC said in a statement
