Stewart, the Pembroke Welsh corgi that played the beloved dog Cheddar in the hit US comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died, his owner has said.
Stewart was 13.
In an emotional post on Instagram, the dog’s owner said: “My precious boy Stewart crossed the rainbow bridge today.”
Describing his last day, the owner said: “We went to the beach (his favourite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers.
“We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each others company.
“Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean.
“He was one in a million kind of a dog, he was my supaah staah (super star).”
Cheddar was played by a few dogs on the show, but Stewart was the longest-serving pooch to hold the role.
Cheddar is the dog of Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), the head of the 99th precinct of the New York Police Department.
He featured in the show’s Halloween heist episodes, as well as being the ring bearer at the wedding between Jake and Amy (Andy Samberg and Melissa Fumero), where he later passes out from eating too much of the Die Hard-themed cake.
Stewart is survived by Stella, who is now taking on the role of the captain’s pooch.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s future looked in doubt last year, after Fox cancelled the show due to declining viewership; however the show was later picked up by NBC who re-commissioned the cop-comedy for another two series.
